CorelDraw for drawing, design, and desktop publishing might seem a bit unfamiliar to many Mac users, and for good reason. Until two years ago, the program wasn't available on Apple systems since version 11 first appeared in 2001.

That changed with the arrival of CorelDraw Graphics Suite in early 2019. The suite includes the Corel Photo-Paint editor, making it a clear contender not just against Adobe Illustrator but also challenging Photoshop's dominance on macOS.

Now, the leading Canadian software company Corel is back with a powerful update featuring new AI-powered features, cloud-based collaborative review options, and overall improved performance. While this isn't enough to break Adobe's long-standing hold on the Mac creative community, it's still an upgrade worth considering.

Cloud Collaboration

For those tired of subscriptions, the good news is that CorelDraw Graphics Suite 2020 hasn't (yet) done away with perpetual licenses, allowing new users to pay $499 today and continue using the software in the foreseeable future without spending another dime. Interestingly, Corel has eliminated discounted upgrades from older versions, hinting that perpetual licenses might soon become a thing of the past. For now, current 2019 owners without upgrade protection must either pay the full price for the new version or be forced into a recurring $35 monthly subscription ($249 annually).

Aside from always having the latest and greatest version, one of the benefits of subscribing is online collaboration, a new feature in the company's web-based version, also available as a separate Pro subscription add-on for perpetual users. The sleek CorelDraw.app allows creating or editing illustrations from a web browser (Safari works, but Chrome, Edge, or Firefox is recommended), and artists can now share designs with others, who can then comment and annotate remotely—a crucial tool in the current COVID-19 landscape.

Although file sharing starts from within the CorelDraw desktop app using the comments inspector, the rest of the collaboration process happens entirely on the web app. (Files can also be uploaded directly from disk to Corel Cloud, bypassing CorelDraw entirely.) This seems like a missed opportunity, as the collaboration tools are otherwise robust.

Participants can be configured as non-access, viewers, reviewers, or approvers, and invitees aren't required to set up a Corel account. Microsoft and Google Suite logins are supported, or guests can opt to receive a login link via email. Comments and responses appear instantly, and the annotation tools provided are more than adequate for the task.

Tracing a Path

The real standout feature in CorelDraw Graphics Suite 2020 isn't one new thing, but rather how AI is implemented across multiple features. The first is resampling low-resolution images; for example, AI and machine learning are now used to significantly reduce or completely remove artifacts from blurry JPEG files.

Resampling works in the Corel Photo-Paint package as well as directly on bitmaps in CorelDraw. Select a placed image, then choose resample from the menu. There are two default modes (bicubic and nearest neighbor), but after manually increasing the file resolution to the desired amount, a pair of additional options, Illustration and Photorealistic, appear. Choose the option that best describes your image, and an optional noise reduction slider will appear. While resampling can't add details that don't exist, it does achieve a noticeable improvement, turning otherwise unusable low-res images into something useful.

The results are more dramatic when converting bitmap images to vectors using PowerTrace, a previously standalone application now integrated into the Trace Bitmap command in CorelDraw on the property bar. The process takes a bit longer before displaying side-by-side before and after previews, especially when making resampling adjustments—but most bitmaps we converted to illustrations had finer details and were ready for use without further cleanup.

AI has also enabled the creation of a new category of effects called Art Style, which changes the appearance of a selected image or object so you can see how your work looks in a completely different style. Found under Effects > Creative > Art Style, there are 17 one-click presets including Sienna, Post-Impressionistic, and Saturated Acrylic, each with three levels of detail and an option to adjust intensity. They're quite impressive, but many take up to 30 seconds to render a preview, creating temporary confusion as there's no visual feedback of anything happening.

Variable Fonts

CorelDraw Graphics Suite 2020 adds support for OpenType variable fonts, offering a wider range of control over size, width, ornamentation, and other attributes. In the best scenarios, variable fonts save disk space as a single font can be rendered in a variety of different styles.

Despite the good implementation here, variable fonts aren't as useful as they might seem at the moment. Many of the supported fonts I installed using the included Corel Font Manager 2020 weren't much better than traditional fonts, with some limited to width control alone. (However, the Font Manager itself is a godsend, noteworthy for being much better than Apple's lackluster Font Book tool included with macOS.)

Also noteworthy are improvements to the find and replace tool, PDF file export, and how CorelDraw handles paragraph lists, which can now have customizable sublevels of numbered and bulleted text. The included Photo-Paint program—which does a lot but isn't a full Photoshop competitor—adds non-destructive effects and a new Smart Selection Mask tool, making it easier than ever to select the parts of an image you want to keep.

With native support for Sidecar, Touch Bar, and Dark Mode, Corel has done a good job making Mac users feel at home in Graphic Suite 2020. The latest version improves app launch times and overall performance, which the company attributes to GPU optimization, but there's still room for improvement. While CorelDraw, which runs only on Intel processors, works well with Rosetta 2 on an M1 MacBook Pro, I occasionally experienced startup crashes.

Bottom Line

CorelDraw Graphics Suite 2020 seems like a great deal compared to the "everything and anything" approach of Creative Cloud, especially for designers and illustrators who don't need Adobe's video, web, and social media tools. The new features and improvements since the Mac relaunch in 2019 make this a necessary upgrade for those already using the Corel ecosystem. And for those who aren't, there's never been a better time to make the switch.
