Explore Meanings
If you're looking for a specific part of speech, you can click on the noun, verb, adjective, or adverb buttons to show only the related synonyms and words. To take a look at a specific meaning, you can click on the meaning number. Browsing related words is simple: click on the tabs for synonyms, antonyms, parts of speech, and types, and see also, and homophones. To view the definition of a related word, double-click on it. You can also use the back and forward buttons. Related words also have "+" and "-" buttons to be more or less specific. For example, if you’re looking at similar words, you might want to see more closely related words: you can do this by pressing the "+" button, and go back by pressing the "-".
Web References
In addition to using the comprehensive English dictionary and thesaurus provided, if you're online, you can also search your choice of web references. Each reference is located on a separate tab for easy cross-referencing. You can customize the tab list to use your favorite references. Wikipedia and some online dictionaries are installed by default.
Additional Dictionaries
You can also obtain optional dictionaries from third parties, including Oxford, Chambers, and Collins dictionaries, which appear in separate tabs like web references.
Using Custom Glossaries
You can add your own technical glossaries (or company abbreviation lists, etc.) using the option in the "Glossaries" menu.
Word Search
With the "Find Word" feature, you can quickly find words matching a pattern. You can also search a wide range of optional additional word lists using the Find Word window. The screenshot shows what you would get if you performed a case-sensitive search for punctuation in the optional word list "Vehicles and Phrases" for phrases ending with "word".
Full Text Definition Search
Use the "Full Text" button to search for text appearing in any definition. For example, search for "vixen" and you'll find the definition "a mischievous woman". The screenshot shows another example.
Word Plays
Enter a word and you can find all the anagrams and multi-word combinations. You can also find partial anagrams. How many words can you make using the letters in "constitutional"? WordWeb Pro's answer: 726!
Add Definitions
Select "New Definition" from the "Edit" menu to add a new word (or group of words) with a definition. You can also import and export to commonly used spreadsheet format files.
Learn Vocabulary
Use the bookmark feature to remember useful words. There’s a feature to randomly search for one as a way to help you remember vocabulary. WordWeb also creates a list of the words you’ve searched for, so you can refer back and check your recall of the definitions. You can also export the list to a text editor or delete items or clear the entire history list.
Replace, Copy, and Paste
If you're searching for a word from a document you're editing, you can select any word and press the "Replace" button to substitute a synonym. You can also copy parts of the definitions, or all definitions, or the specific related word, or all listed related words (or anagrams/words that match a certain pattern) to the clipboard.
