As one of the last browsers accompanying the Windows operating system since its introduction as the default browser in 1995, Internet Explorer 11 also serves as a precursor to Microsoft Edge, Microsoft's new web navigation tool for both Windows Phone and Windows 10. With a focus on security and faster browsing, IE11 blends previous compatibility with support for the latest web standards—like HTML5, WebM, WebGL, and more—and media codecs.
If you've upgraded your computer to Windows 10, you'll notice that Microsoft's default browser is no longer Internet Explorer, but Microsoft Edge, which began as the default navigation tool for the new Windows Phone operating system and has now logically become the default browser for all devices running Windows 10. In fact, IE is still on your computer, though you'll need to search for it if you still wish to use it. Internet Explorer 11 is the last of its kind and is minimally supported by Microsoft. Thus, IE 11 can be seen as a 'transition browser' between IE and Edge, bidding farewell to the browser almost everyone used at the turn of the century and attempting to regain some of the popularity it first lost to Firefox and then to Chrome over the last 15 years.

It comes with a SmartScreen filter, which checks and alerts you about malicious sites and suspicious downloads before taking you there. Regarding privacy, IE 11 offers two major enhancements—InPrivate Browsing and its Tracking Protection feature. The former, now in line with most of its competitors, allows you to browse without leaving any trace behind—cookies, history, and other temporary files won't be stored anywhere on your computer while browsing in this mode. The latter will prevent cookies and other external interferences from leaving unwanted data behind and collecting private information from your system.
The third major change worth mentioning is the revamped developer tools. They've been redesigned to look more professional, with new features added for checking memory usage and responsiveness. A new emulation feature will let you check site compatibility (or anyone else's, for that matter) all the way back to IE5. However, some windows and menus that open when exploring the full functionality of Internet Explorer 11 seem a bit neglected in terms of look and feel. They remind me of previous versions and confirm that IE11 is merely a bridge between Internet Explorer and Edge, between Windows 7/8 and 10.
