Originally designed as a digital darkroom, Photoshop has long since expanded beyond that niche and has become a standard component for all types of graphic workflows, from print and web design to 3D graphics, special effects, and video production. In the latest release, Photoshop Creative Suite 2, Adobe has added new features for everyone. In addition to new photo editing capabilities, such as automatic perspective controls and improved Camera Raw, the new Smart Objects and Warping tools should appeal to all users.
I'll spill the beans now and tell you that Photoshop CS2 is worth the money ($599 or $149), although there is still room for improvement.

Almost Invisible Improvements
The layers panel no longer has icons for linking layers, as now - finally - you can select multiple layers by clicking sequentially (or holding down command/control to select non-adjacent layers). Linking is still available in the layers menu, but some link-dependent operations have changed. For example, to restrict an adjustment layer to a specific group of layers, you can now group the layers with the relevant Adjustment Layer and then change the blending mode of the group from Pass Through to Normal. Experienced users should not have difficulty getting used to this straightforward procedure.
Locking has also changed, and layers no longer sport the lock icon. Instead, you can lock a layer by selecting it and then toggling the lock controls at the top of the layers panel. Adobe has significantly improved the locking feature, allowing you to lock content and positioning separately.

The layers panel also provides access to the new Smart Objects feature in Photoshop. A Smart Object can be a piece of vector artwork that you imported into Photoshop, or any combination of raster or vector data layers that you created in Photoshop. For example, you can select a layer containing a logo, a layer containing some text, and then group them into a Smart Object. The source layers disappear, and a new Smart Object layer takes their place. Smart Objects work just like any other layer: you can move, transform, change opacity, blending mode, and even apply Layer Styles. However, no matter what you do to it, you can always open it in its original state and modify it. This way, Smart Objects allow for non-destructive editing, as none of the changes you make affect the original data. (If you've worked with Adobe After Effects, you can think of a Smart Object as a pre-composition.) At any time, you can rasterize your Smart Object into a regular layer, thus anchoring the process.
Smart Objects are a boon for transformation processes as they do not affect your original data. For ongoing workflows, where a particular element may change later, this non-destructive approach works wonders. Unfortunately, you cannot apply adjustments or filters directly to Smart Objects. Photoshop users have long cried out for the ability to apply filters in a parametric and non-destructive way. While adjustment layers are a good start, the inability to apply sharpening, noise, blurring, or other filters in a parametric manner is a drawback. However, you can apply adjustment layers to Smart Objects, just as you would with any other type of layer. Even with these complaints, Smart Objects are a fantastic addition that will quickly find their way into your daily workflow. The Photoshop Guide feature has received a boost in intelligence in the form of Smart Guides, dynamic guides that appear when dragging layers. When the edge of one layer approaches another, Smart Guides automatically appear to assist in positioning. This is a welcome addition for any type of layout work.
Like guides in Illustrator, Photoshop now includes Smart Guides that pop up automatically to help you align layers.
You may be pleasantly surprised when you open the Photoshop font menu and discover a WYSIWYG font display. Adobe was clever in implementing this. Instead of displaying the font name in the actual font, which doesn't work well for things like icon or dingbat fonts, Photoshop shows the font name in a general form, with a type sample to the side.
Warp Drive Tool
You can apply warping to layers or selections. The Warp dialog allows you many Bezier control points through which you can distort your image. Unlike Liquify, Warp does not stretch the surrounding area, meaning it is possible to create what looks like a tear in your image. However, since it is vector-based, you can easily change and adjust your warp vectors to get it just right.
The new Warp dialog allows you to create editable flows by dragging control points on a Bezier grid.
Once you accept the change, the warp and cut are applied, and thus you cannot edit it later. I would like to have the ability to add additional control points, but the current feature is very useful even with its limitations.
Vanishing Point
For making precise adjustments and modifications to images, Photoshop's new Vanishing Point tool is nothing short of amazing. You can use Vanishing Point by clicking to define planes that correspond with the perspective levels in your image. Once set up, you can copy image data and paste it from one plane to another, or make several other types of adjustments, and Photoshop automatically flips, distorts, and modifies your pasted data to match your destination's perspective.

As if that weren't enough, Adobe has incorporated healing technology into the Vanishing Point tool, which automatically blends pasted images into their new background.
The Vanishing Point feature is presented within its conditional dialog box, which includes a toolbox. In addition to the plane definition tool, there is a marquee selection tool for selecting and copying, a cloning tool, and a brush tool. All of these tools are automatically constrained to the perspective you define using the plane definition tool. With this simple set of tools, you can make adjustments that would take hours of precise drawing using the regular toolbox in Photoshop.
