Overview of Adobe Premiere Pro CC

Adobe Premiere Pro is a powerful application for editing your videos. Video editors and enthusiasts around the world prefer this tool, developed by the globally renowned Adobe company. With its timeline editing concept, Adobe Premiere Pro makes video production as easy as ABC. The built-in plugin system allows you to export a wide range of video formats. All the tools in this application combined, along with its 3D editing capabilities, make Adobe Premiere Pro a highly sought-after asset.

Working with videos in Adobe Premiere Pro is incredibly straightforward. All you need to do is start a new project and then add your multimedia content. This multimedia can include images, videos, and audio files. You can then edit these files on the timeline according to your preferences.

The most significant development in Adobe Premiere Pro is its support for Track Targeting. With Track Targeting, you can place source sequences into other sequences. Previously, this process was done through nesting. Now, you can place source sequences into other sequences with or without overlap. Track Targeting allows you to position the track exactly where you want it in your video.

Adobe Premiere Pro has also been enhanced with GPU acceleration technology. This technology allows you to preview video results without rendering them first. This way, you can save a lot of your valuable time, speeding up your workflow. If you're comfortable with the older version,

many video editing programs require a tedious and time-consuming transcoding process because they cannot integrate with all cameras. Adobe Premiere Pro has different ideas and supports a variety of cameras such as Nikon, Panasonic, Kodak, BenQ, and more. This makes it possible to edit digital videos recorded from the aforementioned cameras and many others.

Adobe Premiere Pro integrates seamlessly with other Adobe applications like After Effects, Photoshop, and Audition, to name a few. This will help you transfer your project effortlessly from one Adobe application to another.

User Interface

Premiere Pro features a flexible and polished interface. The startup view helps you quickly access projects you've been working on, start new projects, or browse Adobe Stock. The dark program window keeps your clips in focus, and you can switch between functions like assembly, editing, color, effects, audio, and titles. You can edit these or create your own custom workspaces, and even drag any of its panels and float them wherever you want on your display screen(s). You can now create content boxes based on search terms.

By default, the editor uses a four-panel layout, with the source preview in the top left, project preview in the top right, your project assets in the bottom left, and the timeline tracking along the bottom right. You can add and remove control buttons as desired; Adobe has removed a set by default for a cleaner interface. Since many editors rely on keyboard shortcuts like J, K, and L to navigate through the project, having fewer buttons and a clearer screen makes a lot of sense. It's a highly flexible interface, and you can undock windows and drag them to your heart's content. When you hover the mouse over a clip in the source panel, it scrubs through the video.

Premiere is now touch-friendly, allowing you to move clips and timeline elements with your finger or by pressing buttons. You can also zoom in/out on the timeline or video preview window. You can even set in and out points with a click on the thumbnails in the source container. Final Cut supports the new MacBook Pro Touch Bar, but I prefer the touch screen capability, as unlike the Touch Bar, the touch screen doesn't require you to take your eyes off the screen and your video project.

When you click on a media thumbnail, you get a scrub bar and can set in and out points directly there before inserting the clip into your project. Premiere offers several ways to insert a clip into your sequence. You can click the "Insert" or "Overwrite" button in the source preview screen, or you can simply drag the clip thumbnail from the media browser to the timeline or preview screen. Holding down Command (or Ctrl on Windows) will make your clip overwrite the contents of the timeline. You can even drag files directly from your operating system's file system into the project.

The media browser also has tabs for effects, markers, and history, the latter of which can help you return to a good spot if you make a mistake. Markers have also been improved, with the ability to attach notes and place multiple markers at the same time. Markers can have durations in timecode, and the Markers tab shows you entries with all this for each marker in a clip or sequence. Clicking on a marker entry here takes you directly to its point in the film.

Any device that can create video footage is fair game for import into Premiere Pro. The software can capture from tape, scene detection, shuttle transfer, and timecode settings. It also imports raw file formats from professional cameras like Arri Alexa, Canon Cinema EOS C300, and Red Epic. Resolutions up to 8K are supported. Of course, you can also import videos from smartphones and DSLRs. For high frame rate video, the software allows you to use proxy media for faster editing.

Trimming Clips in Your Project

Premiere Pro continues to offer four types of edits that seem to belong in a water park - Roll, Ripple, Slip, and Slide - and adds the standard trim mode. All of these are clearly accessible on the left of the timeline. The shape and color of the cursor provide visual cues about the type of edit you're dealing with. A welcome new feature is that you can actually make adjustments while playback is happening.

With a nice touch, holding down the mouse button while moving a clip's edit point (or double-clicking on an edit point) opens a view of the two clips in the preview window. If you double-click on an edit point, it switches to Trim mode, which shows the incoming and outgoing frames, with buttons to move back and forth by one frame or five and another to apply the default transition.

As with Adobe Photoshop image layers, layer support in Premiere Pro allows you to apply adjustments. These will affect all tracks below them. You can create a new adjustment layer by right-clicking in the project panel. Then you drag it to your timeline clip and start applying effects.

Transitions and Effects

If you've been reading my recent reviews of enthusiast-level video editing software, you might be surprised to learn that Premiere Pro includes only 38 transition options (you can, of course, install plugins for more). This is because in the professional community, most of those hundreds of transitions offered by the likes of CyberLink PowerDirector are considered cheesy - if professionals want to make fancy transitions, they build their stunning custom transitions in After Effects or buy polished transitions through third-party plugins.

Otherwise, all the video effects you would expect are there — keys, lighting, coloring, and transformation. You can apply an effect with just a double-click. The search box makes it easy to find the effect or transition you need.

The Warp Stabilize feature, brought over from After Effects, is very effective at smoothing out bumpy videos. But it takes some time, analyzing one frame at a time. You can adjust the amount of cropping, modify the smoothness ratio, and automatically adjust the edges. But the long wait pays off. The result was noticeably smoother than it was in Final Cut Pro X in the test I conducted.

Collaboration

New collaboration features rank high on the list of new features in Premiere Pro. Creative Cloud Libraries allow you to store and organize assets online, and the experimental Team Projects feature allows editors and motion graphics artists using After Effects to collaborate in real-time. Team features are only available for business-level accounts, which cost $29.99 per user per month. Any Premiere user can sync settings with Creative Cloud to edit from different computers and locations. This also means that editors can move to any device running Premiere and see their environment settings replicated by logging into the cloud.

360 VR Video

Premiere allows you to view 360-degree VR footage and change the field of view and angle. You can view this content in a stereoscopic format, which is a great way to say you can see it in 3D using standard red and blue glasses. You can also make your video track and display a head-mounted screen.

However, the software could only open my Samsung Gear 360 footage if it had already been converted to a rectangular format. Both Corel VideoStudio and CyberLink PowerDirector and Pinnacle Studio can open footage without this conversion. You can't see the spherical view alongside the flat view as you can in those applications, but you can easily switch between these views if you add a VR button to the preview window. Conveniently, the tool allows you to tag a video as VR so that Facebook or YouTube knows it's 360-degree content.

Multi-Camera Angle Editing

Premiere's multi-camera capabilities can now accommodate an unlimited number of angles, limited only by your system's capabilities. Final Cut Pro X allows you to work with only 64 angles, although most projects won't need more. In Premiere, you can select your clips and choose to create a multi-camera source sequence from the right-click or cut menus, then choose a sync method. The software now does a good job of syncing clips based on their audio, which is useful for DSLR-shot clips since they lack timecodes. As in Final Cut, the Multi-Camera screen allows you to record angle changes while playing the composite video, either by simply clicking on the angle box or the corresponding number. You can then adjust the cuts using the regular editing tools.

Color Adjustments and Effects

The Lumetri Color Tools in Premiere elevate the program to a Photoshop-like state for video. These tools provide a great deal of color manipulation, along with a fantastic array of film looks and HDR appearance. You can adjust white balance, exposure, contrast, highlights, shadows, and black point - all of which can be activated using keyframes. Saturation, Vibrance, Faded Film, and Sharpen adjustments are also available. But the curves and color wheel options are truly impressive. There's also a very nice Lumetri Scope display, which shows the relative use of red, green, and blue for the current frame.
