What Makes Corel PaintShop Pro 2023 Stand Out

User Interface and Usability
The interface is divided into Photography, Essentials, Complete, and Sea-to-Sky workspaces, allowing you to choose the one that best fits your skill level or the task at hand. This breakdown makes the software more manageable for new users, regardless of their editing experience.

The Photography workspace is designed for quickly and easily applying a range of effects, including the new AI features mentioned above. It offers a split-screen view that can be dragged to show the before and after images, a fantastic feature commonly found on websites to showcase before-and-after photos.

The Essentials workspace resembles Photoshop Elements, providing a simplified version of the full workspace that doesn't overwhelm average users, while the Complete workspace itself is the fully-featured and more advanced version of the software. In full mode, the tool and layers panels are where you would expect them to be, featuring easily recognizable icons, while the menus are clear and the user interface design makes navigation comfortable.

Sea-to-Sky is the ultimate workspace, just like the Photography workspace, it is intuitive and easy to use, making it perfect for beginners who want to apply powerful effects without any prior photo editing knowledge. These two workspaces are so easy to use that anyone can master them in just a few minutes. Additionally, the Photography and Sea-to-Sky workspaces are touch-friendly, so if your laptop or screen is touch-enabled, you can take advantage of this feature if you wish.

Given the cost of the basic version compared to the Ultimate version of PaintShop Pro 2021, it makes sense to pay a little more to benefit from the additional features and numerous plugins. The Ultimate version is an absolute bargain when you consider what’s included.

AI HDR Studio is a plugin that provides HDR-style effects for single-exposure images—there's no need to combine exposures and tone mapping, although this functionality is available in the full workspace. AI HDR Studio includes various styles that can be applied at the touch of a button, with the overall strength controlled using a slider.

The Sea-to-Sky workspace was developed to meet the growing use of drones and underwater photography, thanks to waterproof smartphones, and offers four categories of effects specifically designed for underwater and drone photography. The effects provide one-click adjustments that take the hard work out of photo editing and are perfect for beginners who may not yet know how to achieve a similar effect manually.

Then there's Painter Essentials 7, a drawing program, Photomirage Express that allows you to add animations to still images, Corel AfterShot 3, a RAW editing software, and finally, the Corel Creative Collection which includes additional brushes, materials, and over 100 royalty-free backgrounds.

Other notable features include AI Upsampling for enlarging images, AI Denoise for noise removal, AI Artifact Removal for eliminating JPEG artifacts, and AI Style Transfer for applying artistic effects that work with the content of the image rather than simply overlaying it. This type of effect can be fun at first, although users are likely to move past it quickly.

Quality of Results
The results from the automated functions within the Photography and Sea-to-Sky workspaces can be hit or miss—the success depends on the image used, but there are strength sliders for some of these controls, along with one-click effects at varying strengths, so there is a degree of control. In some cases, the results may not be close to the quality you can achieve through manual control in the full workspace, but this is often the case with these types of effects.

AI Denoise struggled to reduce noise in the tested image, as chroma noise remained visible, and details were softened, giving a waxy appearance. While the black-and-white effect from AI HDR Studio works very well, the Sea-to-Sky effect applied to an underwater image provides clarity to a dull starting image—which can be quite common in underwater photography. The key takeaway here is that experimentation is essential to find what works best for you and your images.

From within the full workspace, you can achieve excellent image quality thanks to the tools, filters, and overall level of control on display. Within this workspace, there is also an organizer that makes searching your entire computer for images quick and easy, allowing you to open them in PaintShop Pro without leaving the program.
