Overview of Adobe Photoshop Elements 2018
Adobe Photoshop Elements 2018 is a powerful and efficient program that allows you to organize a vast collection of your photos and enhance them using a set of manual tools designed to improve image quality. Each of us captures photos of beautiful moments in our lives and wants to preserve them with some edits that will undoubtedly enhance the image and improve it significantly. All of this can be done with Adobe Photoshop Elements 2018.
The Adobe Photoshop Elements 2018 program is somewhat complex for a beginner, consuming processing power during installation and taking some time to set up on your system. Once installed and activated, you will be able to easily organize and edit your photos. Managing images is straightforward, and with just a few clicks, you can evaluate your photos and even send them as email attachments. You can also share your images on social media platforms like Facebook, Flickr, and YouTube, and burn your photos to a CD for backup purposes. Adobe Photoshop Elements 2018 allows you to edit your images, supporting all basic editing operations such as cropping, rotating, skin tone correction, and more. It also enables you to extract objects from various images and combine them to create a beautiful picture. There is a collection of pre-designed frames in the program that you can use directly, and with Adobe Photoshop Elements 2018, you can easily design a photo album and add text to your album. You can also add frames and masks to your photos.
Photoshop Elements 2018: The Organizer Tool

Like Photoshop's Bridge, the Elements Organizer assistant that comes with both Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements provides the foundation for selecting, organizing, and searching through your photo collection to find the best shots for editing, sharing, creating artwork, or making slideshows. The organizer receives a significant update in the 2018 version.

The automatic organization feature allows you to use a slider to choose the number of best shots you want to view.
This year's organizer introduces "Auto Organization," an AI-derived feature that analyzes images based on quality criteria such as composition, exposure, focus, and faces, selecting only a small portion from thousands of potential images. The slider lets you dictate how many photos you want to include in the results. The Smart Tag feature, introduced last year, helps Auto Curate identify image content. I found that the results from Auto Curate were hit or miss, as some overexposed and poorly lit images were included among the top results.
Auto Curate is the mastermind behind the selected images for the slideshow.
Photoshop Elements 2018: The Slideshow Tool

Ease of use is the hallmark of the revamped Slideshow tool, which works in conjunction with Auto Curate to automatically identify the best shots, allowing you to choose from various themes and built-in soundtracks. You can customize slideshows using your own audio clips from iTunes, add captions to images, rearrange slide order, or import additional photos and videos. It only takes a few clicks and a few minutes to produce a shareable slideshow.

Open Eyes Closed: Like Picasso
Based on facial feature adjustment tools like "Flip the Frown," which allows you to turn frowns into smiles, Elements 2018 is now equipped to replace open eyes with closed ones. This is a problem we all face - when the subject blinks at the exact moment you click the shutter.
Elements suggests photos from which you can capture alternative eyes, but the results can be somewhat odd, as shown in the screenshot below.

It's best to find the same subject in a similar position. This shouldn't be too difficult if you've taken a few consecutive shots of the same person, as lighting, position, and other parameters should be consistent. I took several photos for this purpose, asking the subject to close their eyes in one shot and open them in another. This yielded much better results, as shown below. It would be nice to have additional tools, including one to adjust eye position, as they don't always align perfectly.
Auto Selection: Useful but Needs Improvement
As with previous versions, Adobe Photoshop Elements 2018 comes equipped with various selection tools, including the Magic Wand, Lasso Tool, and Selection Brush Tool, each with its own level of difficulty and precision. The new auto-selection feature is the easiest of all. Essentially, you just need to draw a box around the object you want to select, and Elements will do the rest. You can even select multiple objects or subjects within the same image.
Guided edits are very helpful for those new to photo editing or those looking to learn a new technique.
However, the auto-selection is not perfect and requires more attention when dealing with more complex subjects, such as a person with flyaway hair or a building with foliage adjacent to a straight edge. When the subject is not well-defined against its background, you may need to adjust the selection by adding or subtracting parts of the image, which isn't too difficult but can be time-consuming.
The auto-selection works well in selecting the barn in the image below. But you can see it also selected some stones in front of the building, as well as some foliage along the right edge of the structure. The add tool allowed me to include the remaining stones in the selection; the remove tool was later used to eliminate the leaves on the right edge from the selection.
Guided Edits: User-Friendly
Guided edits are step-by-step guides that walk you through various tasks. They are very helpful for newcomers to photo editing or those looking to learn a new technique. For the 2018 version of Elements, four new options were added: background replacement, double exposure, artistic overlays/shapes, and watercolor effects.
Background Replacement
Among the four new guided edits, the most useful is the background replacement. Using one of the selection tools (including the new auto-selection), this guide walks you through the process of selecting a subject and replacing the background. It's a good educational tool, much like many of the other guided edits, so you can perform the same task independently in the future.
I used the auto-selection to select the dancer; while the selection was very precise (thanks in large part to the contrasting and clear background), I had to adjust two very small areas around their hands. But the touch-up was quick and simple. Adding the new background was easy with a single click, and the dancer's position was adjusted using the move tool.
Conclusion
Photoshop Elements 2018 is built on a solid foundation for consumer photo editing that allows anyone to achieve advanced special photographic effects without being a photo expert, and its increasingly integrated use of AI and machine learning saves time for busy families looking to quickly share photos and slideshows.
The 2018 version also enhances the growing and consistent suite of guided edits to help families create a memorable catalog of their lives. I have no specific complaints about how these new guided edits work, but I found this year's entries to be generally more utilitarian and somewhat less creative and inspiring than in the past. Some minor stability issues arose while testing the organizer with the new MacOS High Sierra, but the freezing and intermittent crashing seemed to dissipate after repeated use.
If you were satisfied with last year's version of Photoshop Elements and weren't driven crazy by family members who can't keep their eyes open long enough to beat the shutter, you might be inclined to skip this version. However, despite some initial shortcomings in the Auto Curate feature, it is likely to be a significant time-saver for those with thousands of photos and will help create quick, shareable slideshows, definitely worth a second look, while the auto-selection is worth the price of admission.
