Adobe Photoshop is well-known as the strongest and best tool for design and photo editing:

Indeed, two newer versions have been released after CS5, but I am sharing download links for this version due to its compatibility with older Windows versions. It is recommended for users with low-end computers that cannot run or meet the requirements of modern versions like CC and CS6.

General Information about the Program

Pros: The 'Content-Aware Fill', 'Refine Edge', and 'Mini Bridge' features are standout tools. Puppet Warp will be fantastic for many users; there are a huge number of adjustments, enhancements, and additions.

Cons: It is still slow. The installation program will not transfer your old settings and preferences.

With the release of CS5, Photoshop, which has been around for 20 years, reached version 12. For an older program, major upgrades usually do not bring about massive changes. The CS5 interface is largely the same, and the fundamentals of the program have not changed. This is a good thing: dramatic changes in the daily functions of an essential tool can really slow you down. However, there are powerful new additions to the Photoshop toolkit, and enough improvements to make this upgrade appealing. Regardless of how you use Photoshop, you may find something you enjoy using in CS5.

The full version of Photoshop CS5 costs $699. The upgrade is $199. It is also part of five Creative Suite packages. Note that this review does not address features that are only available in the extended version of Photoshop.

Easy Retouching and Improved Masking
CS5’s Content Aware Fill feature has received a lot of press, and for good reason. It is an easy-to-use tool for all Photoshop users. In fact, you may find that your editing techniques change significantly (think 'getting much easier') thanks to Content Aware Fill.

There is no 'Content-Aware Embed' tool. Instead, it is a new technique you can apply through the Spot Healing Brush or Photoshop's innovative fill command. The Content Aware Fill algorithm attempts (and usually succeeds) to fill an area with 'correct' texture, meaning it looks like the content in that specific area is supposed to look (Figure 1). If you regularly remove elements from an image using the Rubber Stamp, Healing Brush, or Patch tool, you might be able to replace all these features with Content Aware Fill. Not only is it easier, but the results are much faster.

Next on the 'most useful' line is an adjustment to the Refine Edge command in Photoshop. Since all types of effects and adjustments require good masks, creating the mask is one of the most important processes in Photoshop. It’s also one of the hardest.

One of the major problems with selections in Photoshop has always been that the edge of the selection was uniform all the way around. You can refine the selection to create a smooth transition around the selected area, but many subjects—especially people—are not sharply defined around the edges. Typically, you need hard edges around skin and clothing, and soft edges around hair and fuzzy clothing. CS5 solves this problem with some additions to the Refine Edges dialog, which Adobe introduced in CS4 to make mask creation easier.

After making a selection with any of the regular selection tools in Photoshop, you can call up the Refine Edge dialog to smooth, feather, and refine the edges. New to CS5, you now have a new Refine Radius tool to paint on the edges of the selection you want to improve. As you paint, Photoshop analyzes the underlying image and adjusts that part of the selection. The resulting selection will have a mix of hard and soft edges (Figure 2). For feeling and texture that are fuzzy and transparent, and other tricky areas to select, this is a fantastic tool.

Adobe removed the Extract tool after Photoshop CS3, leaving the program without a built-in mask cutting tool. The new Refine Edge features are far superior to the old Extract feature and compete well with third-party masking tools, such as OnOne’s MaskPro.

Puppet Warp
Photoshop has long had respectable distortion tools, but while the Liquify tool is powerful, it is too small for some types of distortions. The new Puppet Warp tool allows you to add a virtual skeleton to something in your image and then move the skeleton's bones.

When Puppet Warp is activated, the current layer is set to an editable mesh. You can add pins to this mesh, then drag the pins to distort the mesh. As you distort, your image is pulled along with it. Puppet Warp distortions occur

in a predictable and controllable manner. However, anything you want to distort must be isolated on its own layer. Fortunately, the Content Aware Fill feature makes this process easier than it was before. For example, let’s say I want to distort the water buffalo horn in Figure 3:

I can select the horn using the Quick Select tool, but then the distortion might distort the entire animal. Instead, I selected the horn and pasted it onto its own layer. This leaves a blank gap in the image, but one Content Aware Fill command mostly solves the problem (Figure 4).

Now I can distort the horn using Puppet Warp without revealing the empty background (Figure 5).

Figure 5. After pinning the horn, I can easily bend and reshape it. Adobe has added some very smart options to Puppet Warp. When they intersect, you can select different layers of depth, so the distorted parts sit correctly in front of or behind other sections. You can also change the tool so that the parts change as you move the points, allowing you to create bulging and exciting effects.

If you have experience using 3D modeling programs, it’s important to note that Puppet Warp is not a reverse motion system. There is no parent/child hierarchy, so you may find yourself a bit confused when using the feature for the first time. Pushing one point will not necessarily move the attached points in the way you are used to.

For art directors and others who need to modify images to fit specific needs, Puppet Warp will be a fantastic tool. Photographers may even find occasional use for it if they need to make precise geometric adjustments.

Camera Raw 6
Adobe has made a number of significant changes to Camera Raw, including some things that Photoshop has needed for a while. At first glance, you won’t see anything different in the Camera Raw dialog, but looking at the Detail tab reveals some new controls for noise reduction. While previous versions simply had sliders for reducing luminance noise and color noise, Camera Raw 6 adds sliders for Luminance Detail, Luminance Contrast, and Color Detail to help balance noise reduction and detail loss.

But while these sliders may seem harmless, Adobe has packed some very advanced noise reduction technology into Camera Raw 6. Previous noise reduction features felt more like gimmicky add-ons, but the new features are powerful tools that compete with the best third-party noise reduction plugins. The noise reduction in Camera Raw 6 is so good that it may open up more ISO options on the camera. Higher settings that were previously very noisy may become usable when processed with Camera Raw 6's noise reduction (Figure 6).

The Camera Raw Effects tab now has two major new features. First, the Grain Simulator does a great job of creating the look of real film grain. Whether you want to create an 'old film look' or match a digital composite element with a piece of film, the Grain simulator provides good control and results.

Second, Adobe has revamped the vignette after crop. It no longer simply darkens the corners, but gives you some styles to add the vignette. You can choose whether shadows or colors should take priority when applying the halftone vignette effect. When using shadow priority for the vignette, you can also change the brightness of the highlight points, allowing you to create bright, shiny lights that shine through dark areas. These controls provide a more realistic simulation of how halftone vignettes occur.

The noise reduction in Camera Raw 6 is a result of Adobe rewriting many of the core processes in Camera Raw. In addition to improving noise removal, this new engine produces better overall image quality, including sharpness and color details that can surpass previous versions.

For many users, 'Photoshop' means 'Camera Raw', as they rarely go beyond the Camera Raw dialog. In CS5, Adobe has served these users well.
