Last year, while I was running down the street trying to stay ahead of six angry bulls in Pamplona, Spain, I had my phone behind me to capture some video for the experience, all the while thinking, how will I color correct this video? Then I looked at the beautiful old buildings facing the street and thought, hey, this palette would work well with the videos I was editing in my hotel room the night before. But how do you capture those colors and reuse them? Fortunately, Adobe has solutions for these annoying problems in the latest version of its video editing application, Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2015.

Create looks using Adobe Hue CC, and they will be available in the Libraries panel of Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2015.
Well, I didn't run with the bulls - I was busy climbing Mount Everest at the time - but if I had, I could have used two iOS apps, Adobe Premiere Clip and Adobe Hue CC, which aim to extend video editing beyond the desktop. Adobe Premiere Clip has been around since last year; it allows you to make simple edits to video on your phone and then upload the composition to Premiere Pro, which will retain the edits and allow you to make further adjustments. Hue CC is new; you can use it to capture images and grab their "looks" - color grading sets - which you can then import into Premiere CC and apply to other videos. So, for example, you could take a picture of a cool, cloudy beach with its muted blue tones and apply it to a nice short video of a big bull chasing you.

Adobe hasn't integrated these apps yet, although it will soon. Now, you can create a look in Hue CC or in Premiere Pro CC, but you can only apply stock looks in Premiere Clip; you can't create or import one, although the updated version of Clip that will add this capability is due any day now, according to Adobe [Update: version 1.2 of Premiere Clip is now live; it allows you to apply looks from your library.]

Choose a Look

The new Lumetri Color panel allows you to create looks and preview how they will appear on your video.
You can create looks in Premiere Pro CC 2015 using the new Lumetri Color panel. Premiere Pro adopted the Lumetri Color engine from Adobe SpeedGrade in 2013, but back then, you couldn't create looks in Premiere Pro; you had to create them in SpeedGrade. Now, you can import and export look files in Premiere Pro, but only using the Lumetri Color panel. In the Effects panel, you'll find Lumetri Presets — but you still can't add any to this list unless you use SpeedGrade.

However, if you drag a Lumetri Preset onto a video in your timeline, it will appear in the Effects Control panel as a Lumetri Color effect, and you can edit it there. You can access looks from your Libraries panel, which pulls from your Creative Cloud account online, but they don't show up as options in the Effects panel or even the Lumetri Color panel. They will appear in the Lumetri Color panel once you drag them from the Libraries panel to the timeline video. You cannot import a look using the Lumetri Color panel; you can only do that using the Libraries panel.

The Lumetri Color panel has a large number of controls, many of which overlap with other color controls - some even share the same name - but they often do not do the same thing or with the same power. For example, you can add a Three-Way Color Corrector as an effect to a video, and you can also add Lumetri Color as an effect too. Both have color wheels for shadows, midtones, and highlights, but using similar settings in each and then switching between them will yield completely different results. Moreover, the Lumetri Color panel uses checkboxes to enable or disable settings, while most other effects use an "fx" icon. You also cannot set keyframes in the Lumetri Color panel; you must use the Effects Control panel.

Lumetri Color effects and the Three-Way Color Correct effect have the same color wheels, but they work differently.
I believe the point of the Lumetri Color panel is not color correction, although you can certainly use it for that. Premiere Pro CC 2015 has plenty of color correction tools, including the aforementioned Three-Way Color Corrector. Instead, I suggest that Lumetri Color is best suited for creating and applying bold, atmospheric styles, feelings, and looks - dark brown, noir, cool and gray - rather than trying to achieve precise localized color. Think Minority Report or Sin City, not the evening news.

The updated, task-oriented workspaces in Premiere Pro CC 2015 are more useful than past workspaces. You can still switch between them, choosing from backup menus like editing, effects, or audio, or a new color workspace, all optimized for their specific functions, and you can create your own custom workspaces. You don't even have to go to the menu — the menu appears in a small horizontal list at the top of the screen.

A little magic with makeup

The new task-oriented workspaces are further enhanced workspaces for specific tasks.
Adobe added two new features to help enhance talking head videos. The Face Tracker allows you to draw a mask on a face and then apply effects to the mask, even as the face moves (within limits, of course). This seems to be an improvement on the masking and tracking feature introduced in Premiere Pro 2014, which was primarily for applying identity masks. Now, you can use it to achieve more precise effects, like changing eye color, applying a nice tan, or making steam puff out of nostrils. As with most of these effects, I found it works best with someone looking directly at the camera. Bonus fun: you can export Face Tracker data for use in Adobe's new Character Animator program, a feature found in Adobe After Effects CC 2015. You can create weird facial expressions and save them, then apply them to an animated character, which will then mimic your expressions.

When editing talking head video, we often want to edit out ahs and ums and the boring bits — which doesn't leave much, but you work with what you have. The new Morph Cut in Premiere Pro can help hide the transition between two clips — but only if they are of people's faces. It won't even let you try it, like beach scenes. I found it worked well as long as the face in the previous clip was close to where it was in the next clip.

If you are facing the opposite problem - your talking head has run too long, and you need to hit a precise video length - the new time adjustment option in Media Encoder may help. You can enter a change of up to 10 percent, plus or minus. If you prefer, you can just set a specific duration, and Premiere Pro CC 2015 will add or remove frames to achieve that goal. Whichever way you choose, it won't let you exceed 10 percent, which is probably a good thing, as even a 5 percent increase in length caused noticeable and awkward jumps in the exported video. A 3 percent decrease looked better, but I could still see some artifacts, but maybe that was because I was looking for them.
