Premiere Pro is the most advanced video editing software available for Windows PCs, but it has faced a significant issue: preview performance. Editing high-definition video in Premiere Pro CS4 was slow and impractical, as the software struggled to play anything more than a single stream with minimal effects, even on high-spec computers.

Things are very different in CS5. The software now supports 64-bit operating systems only (dropping support for Windows XP), and it comes with a new preview and rendering engine called Mercury Playback Engine. We tested it on a Windows 7 64-bit computer equipped with a Core i7 processor and 8GB of RAM, and we were surprised by the preview performance. It managed 10 simultaneous streams of 1080i AVCHD - a very demanding format to decode. Sony Vegas Pro 64-bit could only handle five streams on the same PC. Apple Final Cut Pro does not support Windows, but in tests on a high-spec Mac Pro costing £5000, it managed 14 streams after converting to a more friendly format. Our test PC for CS5 cost around £1000, so 70% of the performance for a fifth of the price seems like a very good value.

Part of the reason for CS5's impressive performance is a new feature that allows users to set the preview resolution - something Vegas Pro has offered for years, by the way. To achieve the numbers mentioned above, we set playback to half resolution (960 × 520), which is usually sufficient for making precise adjustments. Setting to full resolution means that both Adobe and Sony editors can only manage four AVCHD streams. This ability to balance preview detail and smoothness is very welcome, but we would like to see clearer readings when frames are dropped.

We did not immediately see such massive improvements in Premiere Pro's ability to preview effects in real-time. However, equipping our test PC with the appropriate nVidia graphics card gave a significant boost to effects performance. The software uses Nvidia's CUDA architecture to access the graphics processor, which has many parallel cores perfectly suited for video editing tasks.

Unfortunately, the current list of supported cards is limited to the GeForce GTX 285, which costs £250, and various Quadro models starting at £600. We had the opportunity to test the Quadro FX 4800, priced at £1500, which managed 14 instances of the Three-Way Color Corrector effect at 1080p. Without the card, our PC dropped frames with just one instance of this effect.

There are 30 other effects that benefit from CUDA acceleration, clearly marked in the library. Motion, blending modes, and opacity are also accelerated, but we found that very complex timelines caused Premiere Pro to crash when CUDA was enabled. It seems the software is not perfectly written to share the load between graphics and CPUs. However, we were testing with Beta code - and we will update this review when the final code is available.

The Mercury Playback Engine is such an important new feature that it is perfectly acceptable for there to be a few other missing features. There is native support for many professional camera formats like AVC-Intra. The new chroma-keying tool, called Ultra Key, is essentially Adobe Ultra, a standalone application bundled with Premiere Pro CS3. Unfortunately, the ability to capture a background shot has disappeared - instead, you can only select the background color - but it still delivers excellent results. The bundled DVD and Blu-ray authoring application, Encore, can now export projects in Flash format for the web. Adobe Media Encoder now runs as a separate application, allowing you to hit Export and render in the background while continuing to edit. The only serious competition for Premiere Pro on Windows PCs is Sony Vegas Pro. Adobe's editor already leads in terms of complex editing tools, and now it also has the advantage of speed. The fact that it competes with Final Cut Pro on significantly more affordable machines means it is also an excellent choice for web video production and independent filmmakers.
