The easiest way to lock a folder is by enabling encryption, which prevents other computer users from opening/viewing your files. You must log into your account to access the files in the folder you locked.

Built-in Method in Windows 11

This method is integrated into Windows 11, and it’s very easy to activate:

Select the folder you want to lock, right-click on it, and choose "Properties."

In the General tab, click on Advanced Options at the bottom.

Check the box for Encrypt contents to secure data.

Click "OK" to save, then "OK" again in the folder properties window.

Select Apply changes to this folder, subfolders, and files > OK to ensure that any folders within this folder are also locked.

You’re done! Windows 11 places a lock icon on the folder to indicate that it is encrypted behind your user password.

Now, if anyone wants to open the files in this folder, they must log in under your user account.

Follow these steps to back up your file encryption key and avoid losing access to your locked files permanently.

To start, search for certmgr.msc in the windows.

Navigate to Personal > Certificates using the right pane.

Select the items that refer to Encrypting File System, right-click on the selection, and choose All Tasks > Export.

Proceed through the Certificate Export Wizard by clicking Next > Yes, export the private key > Next > Next (accept the default settings).

Choose a password, enter the password for the private key, and then click Next.

Select Browse, name the PFX file, and save it in a location you can remember.

Click Next > Finish to complete the wizard. If you want to use the certificate in the future, open it from where you saved it.

How to Password Protect a Folder on Windows 11 with Third-Party Software

There is no built-in way in Windows 11 to set a unique password for each folder you want to lock; however, there are plenty of programs that can accomplish this task.

Here are two examples:

7-Zip

7-Zip is an archiving tool, meaning it can compress the folder while applying a password to it. You can share the locked folder with anyone, even if they don’t have 7-Zip installed, but the files inside the folder cannot be opened until the correct password is provided.

Download and install 7-Zip.

Right-click on the folder you want to lock, go to See more options > 7-Zip > Add to archive.

Make the following adjustments:

Change the archive format to 7z

Select Create SFX archive

Provide a password

Select Encrypt file names

Feel free to adjust other settings on that screen, such as the new file name and location or compression level.

Select OK to save and create the locked folder.

Now, you can open the newly created EXE file to see the password prompt; enter the password you created earlier to unlock the folder. This file can be shared with anyone, and they will receive the same password prompt.

The options we enabled above did not include the option to remove the original folder, ensuring that no one can access the original files.

Enter the password in the prompt, select OK to save it, then OK again in the confirmation box.

You can now close the program. When you want to view/use this folder, open Wise Folder Hider, provide the login password from step 2, and then select Open next to the folder to enter that password.
