Overview of Adobe Premiere Pro CS6

There are already two types of tools available in the market for video editing. However, Adobe has entered the scene with the stunning Adobe Premiere Pro CS6. This is the latest complete suite for video editing. It's not just a simple movie editing application with limited effects; it's a full-fledged multimedia production quality video editing software.

When Apple released Final Cut Pro X last year, many veterans were in an uproar because it wasn't just an update to the software they knew and loved; it was a complete departure from what they were used to. You either loved it or hated it.

Those who fell into the latter category started shopping around, and Adobe was very happy to welcome new customers to their platform. With the release of the latest version, part of the major update to CS6, Adobe is working hard to ensure their customers remain satisfied.

Redesigned Interface

The first thing you'll notice is the complete redesign of the interface. Everything revolves around the editing process, with very large source and program screens at the top, and huge thumbnails in the browser section. While it takes up more space now, it’s also incredibly useful as you can see at a glance which clip you want to work on next.

Adobe has definitely taken cues from iMovie and Final Cut Pro X: hover over a clip to browse your footage. It works even better: click on the clip to reveal a small timeline. Drag its playhead to preview it as well, and if you’ve already set in and out points for that clip, they will show up there too (almost making the source screen redundant).

The new interface has been redesigned to give a stronger focus on the clips you are using and the edit you are creating.
This focus on your clips means there’s less space to display your available tools, such as traditional motion and trimming controls, although it’s hard to imagine who would miss them when everything can be controlled using keyboard shortcuts – which is undoubtedly a much more efficient way to work with editing software.

More Performance Enhancements

As with the previous version of CS, the best performance for Premiere Pro CS6 is achieved with the help of a select range of graphics cards that support CUDA, mostly from Nvidia models (CUDA is Nvidia's parallel computing architecture); however, now two AMD graphics cards are also supported on Apple MacBook Pro laptops. If you’re really looking for top-notch performance – and truly exceptional – you can now combine an Nvidia graphics card with an Nvidia Tesla card for dual GPU processing.

The four-year-old workstation has an Nvidia FX4800 graphics card, supported by the Mercury Playback Engine in Premiere Pro CS6 (as it was in CS5.5). I was able to export a short but complex high-definition sequence using Premiere Pro CS5.5 in 2 minutes and 29 seconds, then in Premiere Pro CS6 in 2 minutes and 18 seconds – a slight difference. However, when I disabled the Mercury Playback Engine in CS6 and exported the same project using the Xeon CPUs of the workstation, the task took 14 minutes and 30 seconds. Clearly, if you’re going to use Premiere extensively, your best bet is to invest your money in GPU power, not CPU power.

The standalone media encoder that comes with Premiere Pro CS6, which works with other Creative Suite products, is also a 64-bit application. You can set its watch folder feature to output multiple video formats, and the Media Encoder processes these files simultaneously. Unfortunately, it still cannot output WebM or Ogg video, which are two web video formats compatible with HTML5. It supports H.264 output, which is recognized by most – but not all – browsers. An Adobe representative stated that if Ogg and WebM become "major formats requested by our customers, we will add them."

Until then, to cover all browsers, you will either have to produce videos in those formats using other tools, or you will have to export to Adobe Flash format – wait for it – which all desktop browsers continue to support, and use other delivery methods for mobile platforms.

Performance Power, Web Waiting

For a company that offers so much, it’s surprising that Adobe plays the waiting game on web video. But aside from this limitation in HTML5 video formats, Premiere Pro CS6 expands its lead over other video editing applications. Its GPU-accelerated performance still outshines anything else you can buy, and this is one waiting game I’m glad Adobe is saving me from.

New Editing Features

When it comes to editing, Premiere makes it incredibly easy, and it’s nice to see that many new features seem to be catching up with Final Cut Pro – it’s great when competition brings out the best in competitors.

Without any particular order, you can drag clips from any window to the timeline, which can handle multiple different formats in the same sequence without missing a beat. The Mercury Playback Engine is actually very impressive and played everything in real-time, even clips with many effects applied to them.

Some new editing tools are available, such as double-clicking on an edit point which brings up a cut view where you can change both sides of the edit at the same time. You can even insert a default transition between your clips from there, all done through the program screen.

Warp Speed

You’ll also find some new video effects, such as Warp Stabilizer, which serves a dual purpose of stabilizing your footage (as long as your shakes aren’t too severe) and compensating for rolling shutter. This is often an issue with cameras that have CMOS sensors, creating a wobble effect if the camera is moved too quickly.

Equally important, the color correction tools have been redesigned, and the three-way color corrector comes with many other options to help you tweak your footage perfectly.

If you often work with multiple cameras, you will definitely appreciate the fact that Premiere Pro CS6 can finally handle more than four angles. In fact, this number is now limited by the computing power of the Mac. It’s also designed with the future in mind by offering support for some modern formats. Of course, DV and HD are still there, but you can now also work with 2K, 4K, and 5K without needing to convert the footage before you can use it.

It’s great to see a company that isn’t afraid to redesign its interface without alienating most users (and for those who don’t like the new look, you can revert to the CS5.5 interface as well), and it’s also nice to see a company that isn’t afraid to borrow great features from its competitors, like hovering over a clip thumbnail to browse footage (thanks iMovie and Final Cut Pro X).

What We Liked

But aside from the interface design, the great thing about CS6 is that it builds on what was already there, so if you’re a seasoned Premiere editor, you won’t feel lost stepping into this new version.

We also loved the fact that even running this software on a 5-year-old computer, we didn’t notice any lag, even when playing clips loaded with effects – all without needing to render anything.

It strikes a good balance between keeping the old and looking to the future.

What We Didn’t Like
Well... the interface really. Since Adobe decided to create their own user interface regardless of the platform their software is used on, they lost what made each platform unique for the person working on it. Simply put, Premiere Pro is ugly, and if you’re going to stare at it for hours on end, that might be a consideration – perhaps not a rational one, but a valid one nonetheless.

Striking a good balance between old and new is a great achievement, but it means there are no groundbreaking new tools to use. Apple hasn’t been afraid to introduce something completely new... and look where that’s gotten them, but at least you have to respect a company that dares to take risks. Premiere Pro CS6 is an excellent update, but in a way, it doesn’t dare to do enough.
