With many Windows laptops featuring touch screens, and numerous creative professionals using Microsoft Surface Pro, it's nice to see Illustrator recognizing touch devices and displaying a dialog to switch to touch mode. However, there are many features missing in touch mode: it is limited to what Adobe thinks is useful when working with your fingers, which does not include libraries but does include a clear button to return to the regular interface. There are a few tools in this version: you can place raster images; you can distribute selected objects to align them; and you can flip the direction of variable strokes on the path (so they can transition from thin to thick or thick to thin instead of always running in the same direction, making them look like a real drawing).

The chart feature in Illustrator has not been significantly updated in a long time. Now, the familiar keyboard shortcut displays a preview of what will evolve into a more powerful graphing tool, ideal for creating highly visual charts and graphs. Creative Cloud Charts are currently quite basic, and as the name suggests, you have to do most of the chart editing in the cloud. This means your workflow is to insert a chart, choose a scale by value (the only working option besides the basic bar chart), then click edit in Creative Cloud to open a browser window where you can input your chart values and choose options, such as data orientation and whether the chart is closed together or divided into parts you can drag. You have to go online to change options like spacing and alignment; the only thing you can do in Illustrator itself is choose colors for different elements in the chart and replace the artwork.

The Creative Cloud Chart tool would be ideal for creating custom charts and graphs using vector drawing, but there are only a few tools available so far.

The Scale by Value chart is perfect for graphs: you can drag any piece of vector artwork over the chart to use it as a chart element, where Illustrator automatically scales it to fit the different values. Charts are automatically saved as linked assets that sync with the rest of your libraries, making them easy to reuse in different designs.

Even if it's just a preview, it's useful, and these would be great features if they were built into Illustrator. Perhaps Adobe will move them to the interface once the preview has been around long enough—it will last for about a year. For now, you have to juggle between Illustrator windows and the browser window on your screen, which can be tricky. To access the full range of chart options, you can right-click on the CC Chart tool to access the familiar Illustrator charting tools instead.

Touch mode is not the only way Illustrator supports tablets: there is a suite of mobile apps that allow you to draw assets you want to use in Illustrator and sketch them. You can also add images from your Creative Cloud libraries or drop in lorem ipsum along with your own text. The main drawback is that layouts do not automatically save in Creative Cloud, and are ready to be pulled into Illustrator for the real work—you have to remember to send them there.

With powerful and mature applications like Illustrator, expanding your workflow using the cloud and mobile devices can be a more significant enhancement than additional options and tweaks to existing tools in the main program. Performance improvements are greatly welcomed, and the auto-save option is something many designers have been asking for. The new chart tool looks promising, although—as with the rest of Creative Cloud—ongoing updates are really what matters. Once again, Adobe is taking advantage of the freedom provided by its subscription model to release useful enhancements without having to wait until the list is significant enough to convince someone they will have to pay for the upgrade.
