For professionals, speed is how quickly we can instruct Photoshop with minimal clicks; how fast we can translate our commands from imagination to Photoshop. We have many images to work on, each requiring different tasks. The faster we finish, the more money we make.

Regarding large file processing, this hasn't been an issue. Back in 2000 with Photoshop 6 (CS 'minus 2') on a Dual 450 MHz G4 PowerMac, I had no trouble working with 100 MB 4x5 film scans, so today's 36 MP cameras are a breeze. By the mid-'90s, when individuals could afford computers capable of image editing, photographers had few options for serious work besides Photoshop. Photoshop became the standard because it was in the right place at the right time and kept getting better.

Photoshop has always been, and still is, larger and more complex than most photographers need, so simpler software tailored for photographers is more popular today in 2012. I use Photoshop CS6 daily, not so much for basic adjustments and cropping, but for perspective transformations in my studio photography and its mechanical capabilities for formatting images for publication, like resizing, sharpening, adding layers of specialized text, changing color spaces, file formats, and much more.

For the vast majority of photographers, simpler and broader programs like Aperture and Lightroom are more popular.

Even when I use Aperture for general corrections on LEICA M9 DNG (raw) files, I still use Photoshop for final formatting for publication.

Any of these programs can work on one image in detail at a time or process many images simultaneously, yet Aperture and Lightroom excel at batch processing, while Photoshop is best for working on one image at a time with detailed precision.

Personally, I use Phase One Media Pro to view my images and sort the good from the bad, then drag the good ones into Photoshop CS6 for formatting for their intended use. If I'm shooting in Raw, which I only do with the LEICA M9 because its internal image processing is too poor to produce good JPGs on its own like Nikon and Canon, I'll use Aperture for most image adjustments on DNG files, export the results as JPGs, catalog and sort in Phase One Media Pro, and finish each file in Photoshop CS6.

Before we start: Security Check
Before you begin, ensure your version of Photoshop CS6 is the latest release. A security exploit was reported, allowing malicious users to compromise your system, at the beginning of September. Simply go to Help>Updates in Photoshop CS6 and apply all updates. Creative Cloud users will have these updates pushed to their system upon their next service connection.

Photoshop CS6's acceleration
makes full use of your computer's graphics processing unit (GPU), providing significant speed improvements in many areas. For example, the Liquify filter, previously a sluggish experience, is now accelerated to deliver smooth, real-time smudging even when using brushes up to the new maximum of 15,000 pixels. The new Paint Oil feature adds a paint-like texture, with controls that provide a real-time full-screen preview. Of course, all of this depends on having a sufficiently fast processor and graphics card. Although CS6 runs on Windows XP/Mac OS X 10.6 with only 1GB of RAM, you'll need an OpenGL-enabled graphics card to get the most out of it.

The Liquify filter in Photoshop CS6 is now silky smooth, with real-time operation even at huge image sizes and with brushes up to 15,000 pixels in diameter. The first thing you'll notice in Photoshop CS6 is the new
interface
. You now have a choice of four primary colors, from black to muted gray—so Photoshop can look more like Lightroom if you choose. Everything has been subtly tweaked, from hundreds of redesigned icons (the pen and lasso tools now indicate active hotspots more clearly) to a more consistent and uniform layout.

There's only one new tool in Photoshop CS6, the Content-Aware Patch tool, which takes the technology introduced in CS4 (Content-Aware Scaling) and CS5 (Content-Aware Fill) and extends it into a tool that allows us to select, move, or stretch objects in a scene, more or less smoothly correcting their original position. In practice, the results depend heavily on having the right image. It's a great idea, but it doesn't always come with the goods.

The new Content-Aware Correction tool in Photoshop CS6 can move and enlarge objects—it works well with organic objects, less so with man-made structures.
A major new filter is Adaptive Wide Angle, which lets you correct camera distortion simply by drawing lines that should be straight. It's such a powerful tool that it even allows multi-view stitching to be corrected in a single, natural shot.

Also good for photographers is the improved Camera Raw dialog box, more powerful versions of tools like Clarity (there's no longer a halo effect, even at maximum power) and Defringing (the controls are gone, replaced by a single checkbox that does just that). For the first time in Photoshop CS6, it's also possible to apply local noise reduction.

These strokes can now be dotted and segmented, and can be filled with gradients. Adobe Photoshop CS6 will not only save in the background, allowing you to continue working while saving, but it will also keep an automatic save for a few minutes so that, in case of a crash, you can pick up where you left off. If you still need to return to a manually saved file, you'll always return to the file you intentionally chose to save, rather than its intermediate version.

The Photoshop CS6 Crop
tool has been redesigned so that the image is now cropped behind the crop window. This seems a bit unclear at first, until you rotate the crop, at which point it suddenly makes sense: now the image rotates behind the window, so you can see how it will look without having to crane your neck as you did before.

The Select Color Range tool includes an option to select skin tones—and within it, a separate option to select faces. In practice, it works great: it's not perfect, and when used in conjunction with a mask on an adjustment layer, it requires some fine-tuning, but it's a huge help.

The Select Color dialog box in Photoshop CS6 can now automatically identify skin tones, with a special face detection mode that works well - even when people are wearing hats and sunglasses.

The Actions feature in Photoshop CS6
, which allows you to automate repetitive tasks, has been expanded so that brush strokes, as well as menu and selection options, can now be saved. This means that, for the first time, it's possible to record an entire palette action and play it back with a single click.

include
many small improvements that make life much easier for those working with complex artwork. The Layers panel now has a built-in filter feature, so you can choose to display only layers set to low light, or those containing text, smart objects, adjustment layers—or just about any parameter you can think of. It's now possible to change the opacity, light mode, and color coding on multiple layers, so if you're looking at all the text layers in a document, you can change them all to yellow for easy reference. The Mask and Adjustment panels have now been merged into a new Properties panel, which can be resized for easier adjustments.

It is now possible not only to use layer groups as the basis for clipping masks, but also to apply layer effects to an entire group—previously, they could only be applied to individual layers. The Eyedropper tool has also been modified so that it can test base layers as if the overlapping adjustment layers were not present, making correction and retouching much easier.

After editing photos in Photoshop CS6, users of the standard version of Photoshop CS6 will be pleased to know that the ability to edit movies has been added to the extended version. This means that everyone can now edit movies directly within the application: you can apply all the standard selections for filters and distortions to animated images, as well as add animated layers on top.

You'll still need to purchase the extended version if you want to use the 3D layer tools, which have been completely revamped in this release. The new HUD controls let you extrude, rotate, and wrap 3D objects directly in the middle of your artwork, as well as add edges and inflate them.

Changing the direction of light is as simple as clicking on shadows and dragging them to where you want them. Once you subscribe to Adobe's new service, you simply download an installer, which keeps tabs on the applications you have on your system. This isn't "in the cloud" software; Adobe Photoshop CS6 remains installed on your system, and you don't need to be connected to the internet to use it. This means the initial download can take a reasonable amount of time, so be sure to keep this in mind before starting the installation process.

We've only just begun using Creative Cloud, but the option to store your files in the cloud, quickly drag and drop images into the browser, create color swatches from your photos, and add ASE swatch files to Photoshop is already exciting. There isn't much integration with Photoshop yet, but with the option to roll out incremental updates via Creative Cloud, we can't wait to see what Adobe has in store for us in the coming months.
